Before joining the staff at Goldsmiths, Chris worked as a primary school teacher in Hackney and Tottenham for 13 years and as an advisory teacher in Language Development for a further 5 years. From there he taught at Middlesex University for five years on a variety of QTS programmes, as well as running a Licensed Teacher Scheme, which he led to a successful validation as a school based PGCE programme. He joined Goldsmiths in 1995 when he was appointed as Head of Programme for the Primary PGCE Programme. Later he was appointed to lead the MA Programme and was one of the tutors involved in the initial development of the BA in Education, Culture and Society.

Although his research interests are wide, his most recent focus has been the problem of identity construction within diverse and complex metropolitan societies. This is the theme of his book, ‘The Monkey’s Mask’. He now wishes to extend this further by examining life histories of people who cross national borders; focussing on their interactions with a wide range of mass media; ranging from comic books to the internet. He is particularly interested in discovering how their experiences of the media have affected their sense of identity.
