Tutor: TIM WARD

Picture of tutor Tim Ward Since studying music at the University of York (BA, MA & PhD), Tim Ward's primary interest has been in music and new technology. The principle focus of his work has been the use of computer technology in composition and performance, centered around electroacoustic music and works involving live electronics and improvisation. He has worked at various universities in the UK, teaching and undertaking research in both electroacoustic composition and computer music programming, and has extensive experience of using and teaching Max. He is currently a visiting tutor in the Music Department of the Ionian University in Corfu, and the Music Department of the American College of Greece.

Course prerequisites

Computer literacy is assumed, as is some experience of working with digital audio.

Course content

The Max Introductory courses, for a maximum of 12 participants per course, are designed for students, educators, musicians, composers/sound artists, and performers wishing to utilise live electronics, who may already be working in computer / electroacoustic music but with little or no prior experience of using Max.

The focus of each course will be on the creative compositional applications of Max. The subject matter will range from a comprehensive grounding in the fundamental operations of the system through to key techniques and strategies that can be used to aid the design of musically creative patches.

Course participants will have access to an Apple iMac computer for their use during the course, running the latest Max 5 software. You are also welcome to bring their own laptop computers for use during the course if you wish, but please advise us by checking the relevant box on your application form.

A range of external audio and MIDI interface equipment will be available. Full details of studio facilities are available on the Resources page.

Tea, coffee and sandwiches are available from 'Loafers' cafe in the Main Building from 9am - 3pm. There are several local cafes, restaurants & pubs with lunchtime menus.
