Dr Adam Dinham, Director
Adam Dinham, Reader in Religion and Society, holds degrees in Theology and Religious Studies (BA & MA, Cambridge), Social Studies (MA, Brunel) and Politics and Community Development (PhD, Goldsmiths, University of London). He is qualified as a social worker and has practiced in Social Work and Community Development in city contexts, with an interest in working with faith communities in areas of urban disadvantage. He is policy advisor to a number of faith-based agencies and policy bodies, including the Faith Based Regeneration Network and the CoExistence Trust in the House of Lords, and has advised central government on issues of public faith. He is Peace Studies Fellow at the University of Calgary, Director of the Faiths and Civil Society Network of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and has published widely on faith in the public realm. He is currently Programme Director for the ‘Religious Literacy Leadership in Higher Education’ programme.
Lord Tyler of Linkinhorne, Chair
Paul Tyler comes from a long line of Cornish Anglican clergy, including Bishop Jonathan Trelawny. He was elected Liberal MP (with a majority of 9) in February 1974 but in the October election his increased vote was not enough to resist the swing. He was elected Chairman of the Liberal Party 1983-6; awarded the CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 1985. Paul was elected MP for North Cornwall in April 1992 and appointed Liberal Democrat Spokesman on Rural Affairs, Agriculture and Transport. He served on the Modernisation Select Committee, and led Liberal Democrat efforts to make the Commons more effective. After the 2001 Election he was appointed to "shadow" Robin Cook, Leader of the House of Commons, with particular responsibility for the reform of Parliament. Appointed to the House of Lords in June 2005 he specialises in constitutional reform - including the role of faith representatives in Parliament.
Martha Shaw, Research Assistant
Martha Shaw read French with African & Asian Studies at Sussex before completing a Masters in Social Anthropology at University College, London where she researched the public reaction to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. She then joined Church Urban Fund where she worked on faith based community development. She is a qualified teacher in Social Science and spent 4 years as Head of Sociology at a London secondary school and has also taught at undergraduate level. She is a trained facilitator and has presented on the use of participatory methods in formal education and community work. She has worked on a number of faith based research and practice projects both within the Unit and in Church Urban Fund and has published on the role of faith communities in areas of urban disadvantage.
Matthew Francis, Research Assistant - Religious Literacy Leadership Programme
Matthew graduated from Leeds with a joint-honours degree in Philosophy and Theology and Religious Studies. He subsequently undertook a Masters by Research, where he examined the ideas of Georges Bataille in relation to the problem of meaning in death in contemporary society. He came to university via a career in the private sector and has previously worked as a researcher and consultant for a number of local authorities and charitable bodies. Matthew is the Postgraduate Officer for the Sociology of Religion study group (SocRel) of the British Sociological Association (BSA). He has taught on undergraduate and postgraduate modules on subjects including the Sociology of Religion and Religion in Modern Britain.
Matthew recently completed an AHRC-funded PhD, which investigated the move to violence in the beliefs of groups. He is the editor for RadicalisationResearch.org, an AHRC/ESRC funded website which provides a resource for policy-makers and the media on radicalisation and extremism.
