Learning Enhancement Fellowships 2009

"Enhancing student learning through student feedback"

Each year Goldsmiths provides money to fund academic fellowships to support educational development projects within departments that work to enhance quality and disseminate innovation in learning, teaching and assessment. This years fellowship projects will derive directly from departmental needs as identified in student feedback, such as through the National Student Survey or Programme Monitoring data.

Eight fellowships will be awarded of up to £2000 each.

Application for this fellowship are now closed. Applicants will be informed of the outcome during February.

A number of awards and fellowships schemes are organised by Goldsmiths. These fall into two broad categories: awards that recognise achievement in learning and teaching, and fellowships to enhance learning and teaching.

A further aim is that an internal award or fellowship can be used as evidence for those applying for a National Teaching Fellowship.

Goldsmiths Fellowships

Fellowships are opportunities for members of Goldsmiths staff to receive financial and academic support in exploring an aspect of learning and teaching.
During 2008-09 fellowships are dedicated to two specific topics.

The connection between research and teaching at Goldsmiths
What do we understand by our belief that teaching at Goldsmiths is research-led? What does that imply for the practical development of learning and teaching?
Three fellows have been appointed to investigate this connection: Micheal Young (Music), Anna Furse (Drama) and Thomas Kirsch (Anthropology). They have conducted focus groups with undergraduate and graduate students, and are currently interviewing members of academic staff in each department. A report with reccomendations will be available by the end of 2009.

Effective enhancement of learn.gold
15 fellows have been appointed to review the use of learning technology, particularly learn.gold, in their department. Reports and information will be made available here as the year progresses.

External Awards and Fellowships

National Teaching Fellowship Scheme
This scheme is run by the Higher Education Academy and recognises and rewards individual excellence in teaching in higher education in England and Northern Ireland. The scheme has two separate strands: Individual Awards of around 10,000 to use for Fellow’s personal and professional pedagogic development. An individual award makes the winner eligible to apply for a group project, with a generous grant for use over a period of up to three years

The Learning Enhancement Unit will be publicising the 2009 competition when applications open. If you feel that you, or colleague in your department, might like to apply then please contact the unit soon as possible for an informal chat on taking an application forward.

Goldsmiths has two previous NTFS award winners, Victoria Goddard (Anthropology, 2004) and John Phelps (GLEU, 2006) both of whom would endorse the fact that this is a scheme well worth pursuing.
