Goldsmiths Awards
Peake Awards for Excellence in Learning & Teaching
This scheme was introduced during the 2004/05 session to recognize, and financially reward, excellence in learning and teaching. This year, for the first time, there will be a student-nominated award.
Awards are open to both teaching staff, and to support staff who can demonstrate a significant contribution to students’ learning experiences.
The winners in 2011 are Lucia Boldrini (English and Comparative Literature), Maria Krivenski (Music) and Yulia Kovas (Psychology).
See more information on the 2011 winners, their achievements and approaches.
Learning Enhancement Fellowships
Fellowships for 2011-12 are now closed. Winners will be announced shortly.
Each year Goldsmiths provides money to fund academic fellowships to support educational development projects within departments that work to enhance quality and disseminate innovation in learning, teaching and assessment.
The fellowships this year will support the four 'pillars' of the new strategic plan.

External Awards and Fellowships
The Learning Enhancement Unit are happy to work with departments on projects with external funding, and to help with writing bids for those projects. Sucessful bids originating from the Unit or supported by us include the Jean Monnet Chair from the European Union, and funding from the Higher Education Academy and the Joint Information Systems Committee. Please get in touch as early as possible so we can contribute to your bid.
We can:
- Offer expertise related to learning and teaching, and technology-enhanced learning (to support the bid writing, and the project if successful).
- Provide induction and other support for using Goldsmiths-hosted online environments (for example BigBlueButton for webcasting and meeting, the Mahara online portfolio and group space, and learn.gold the virtual learning environment) as well as the wealth of software and environments on the wider Web.
- Produce summaries of published research in relevant areas.
- Edit and/or proofread bids.
The Unit can offer support for most relevant projects. However, if the commitment of time is substantial, or we would need additional resources (e.g. purchasing equipment) we will need additional funding. We request that this be included in the bid. It may not be clear (at the time you submit a bid) how much support GLEU may need to provide. We understand this – we hope you’ll get in touch as early as you can in the process so we can give you our best estimate.
Our remit is flexible but we aim to work on:
- Projects which investigate and/or develop learning and teaching in Higher Education (including, but not limited to, technology-enhanced learning).
- Projects which contribute to the student experience at Goldsmiths. For example, we would prioritise projects which contribute to student experience, or departmental practice, over projects for which the primary outcome is a publication or external event.
Several funding opportunities are provided by the Higher Education Academy:
- Workshop seminar series - for subject-based learning and teaching events.
- Teaching Development Grants - for individual learning and teaching projects; some funding ring-fenced to early career applicants.
- Collaborative Grant Scheme - learning and teaching collaborations across departments and interdisciplinary.
National Teaching Fellowships Scheme
The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme is run by the Higher Education Academy and recognises and rewards individual excellence in teaching in higher education in England and Northern Ireland.
If you feel that you might like to apply then please contact the unit for an informal discussion about taking an application forward.
