Scholarly Guidance

GLEU offers advice and consultancy on all aspects of learning and teaching (including course design, assessment, lecturing, peer-observation, e-learning etc), both to individuals and groups, from any department. We shall respond to your query through telephone discussions, by email or by meeting. We are also willing to advise on wider learning and teaching enhancement projects in the College and participate in/advise on possible pedagogical research projects.

GLEU embraces a view of support that is local and responsive to the needs of both the Goldsmiths academic community and of academic-related colleagues.

We aim to be both flexible and principled in our approach: flexible in trying to help out in the best way we can in enhancing learning and teaching at Goldsmiths, for the benefit of both students and staff alike; principled, in that we aim to achieve this in informed, scholarly ways that are rely both on an understanding of departmental and disciplinary cultures,  the wider institutional, national and international contexts, and the (higher) educational literature.

More specifically, we aim to do this through:

  • The work our GLEU Liaison Officers will be doing with the Learning and Teaching Chairs – this way, all departments will have dedicated assistance in matters of learning and teaching, whenever the need is felt, including issues raised by the NSS and the International Student Barometer
  • Our workshop series that aim at responding to some of the felt needs for enhancement in the different departments – these will be run inter-departmentally and inter-disciplinarily, in the main, but also, upon request, departmentally
  • Our programmes (PGCert/MA in the Management of Learning and Teaching) that aim at assisting lecturers with less teaching experience to reflect on their practice, in informed ways, in order to enhance it
  • Specific assistance with TEL (Technology Enhanced Learning) issues
  • Observing, if and when requested, colleagues teach in a totally developmental, non-fiscal and anonymous way – this will normally be carried out by the named GLEU Liaison Representative
  • Assisting interested colleagues in applying for funds for educational research (including local Fellowships, if/when available)
  • Helping, in a partnership fashion, in writing and publishing in the field of higher education studies
  • Generally, being responsive to requests put forward to us by colleagues around the College on pedagogical aspects that interest and/or concern them.
