Online learning and accessibility
Accessibility
It is essential that the Web be accessible in order to provide equal access and equal opportunity to people with disabilities.
Web accessibility means that people with disabilities can interact with, navigate through and understand the content of web pages. Learning materials must therefore be designed so that this basic right is complied with. This is not just a legal but a moral obligation HE institutions have towards their staff and students. Web accessibility also benefits people without disabilities.
Websites that are designed in accordance with accessibility principles provide greater flexibility and therefore meet a greater variety of different user needs, preferences and situations. In short, the principles of making your web site accessible simply ensure that they are usable by different users in different contexts. When you come to design your learning material (both for on and offline use!), we can advise on key principles, best practice, general guidelines and techniques, and on how to evaluate accessibility of your resources, and where to find out more.
