Ordinances are approved by Council, which is the College's governing body.
Ordinances contain provisions for decision-making bodies (mainly Academic Board and Departmental Boards), staff employment and research.
The Ordinance for the Creation and Maintenance of Regulations is of key importance in listing all the types of Regulation in the College. This means that there is fixed definition of what is meant by the undertaking, made by both staff and students on arrival, that they will abide by the Regulations.
In the course of a re-structuring of the Ordinances and General Regulations with effect from 1 September 2006, the principle was introduced that General Regulations should be restricted to material with relevance for students (although many sections of Regulations - such as the one which applies to all users of computer services - are relevant to both students and staff).
The texts of Ordinances for various academic years are available as follows:
The College also operates under University of London regulatory arrangements; in particular the Ordinances of the University of London and the regulations and other procedures for Research Degrees.
