Machines will be reused, stripped for spares, or scrapped as appropriate. The contents of hard drives need to to be specially deleted to put them beyond casual recovery to comply with the Data Protection and Misuse Act, and this is currrently carried out by our contractor when the machines are removed from campus. If your department wishes to dispose of an old computer, please follow the steps below.
- Back up all your data where relevant. If you need assistance, IT Services operates a bookable, paid data backup service which can be arranged via the Helpdesk.
- Ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act, where relevant.
- Clearly label items for disposal using removable labels as working/not working. Set aside all equipment for collection, with cables tidied separately.
- Complete the online disposal form with information about the items you wish to dispose of.
- Amend the departmental asset register to reflect equipment inventory changes.
Departments are recommended to keep a small stock of spare monitors, keyboards and mice, which can be used in the event of equipment failure, while waiting for replacement/repair.
