Avian Flu
Avian flu passes from birds to other birds, but there have also been human cases.
There is no evidence that this strain of avian flu (H5N1) can be passed from human to human. The only way you can catch this type of avian flu is with close or direct contact with infected birds.
The chance of catching avian flu is very low and it is safe to eat poultry as the heat from cooking will kill the virus. However, it is always sensible to take care when cooking chicken, turkey or other poultry and it is important to ensure the meat is properly cooked.
- Always wash your hands with soap and hot water after handling raw poultry
- Ensure poultry and eggs are properly cooked through
- Do not allow juices from raw poultry to touch other food that will be eaten raw.
