Nevenka's academic background includes a BA (Hons) in East European Languages, Literatures and Regional Studies and an MA in East European Studies (Nationalism and Identity), both of which she completed at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, UCL. She continues to pursue her interest in the field of nationalism and identity in the Balkans, particularly the former Yugoslavia. Nevenka is also the Administrator for the Centre for the Study of the Balkans.
