The Department
The Department of Human Resources (including Equal Opportunities and Staff Development) currently comprises a team of ten permanent and eight fixed-term members of staff (some of whom are working on the design and implementation of a new pay and grading structure). The whole team work closely together to provide a comprehensive Human Resources service to the College.
The department is instrumental in giving effect to the Colleges strategic HR aim, i.e, “To recruit and retain high-quality and appropriately-qualified staff in all areas of the College, to provide an effective framework for staff development, to develop good management and leadership skills, to develop an effective culture of clear, two-way communication”.
The Department undertakes the full range of Human Resources activities within the College including:
- The development of Human Resources policies and advice to departments on their implementation and operation;
- Employee relations management including liaison, consultation and negotiation with the trade unions at local, regional and national level;
- Advising the College on the law governing human resource management and its implications;
- Representing the College, as appropriate, to external agencies e.g. Employment Tribunals;
- Development of terms and conditions of service appropriate the College’s needs;
- The provision of effective advice, support and guidance to departments in matters of individual performance management, discipline, grievance and other complaint procedures.
- The development of suitable performance management systems and procedures;
- Advising the College and departments on organisational structures, staff profiles and change management;
- The maintenance and review of promotion and regrading schemes;
- The provision of an effective and customer-orientated service concerning recruitment, changes in employment, termination, the provision of necessary information to staff joining and leaving the College etc.;
- The development of training and development strategies and programmes;
- Enabling academic, professional and support departments to manage Human Resources activities within their departments;
- The effective servicing of Human Resources-related committees.
