Designing, building and testing prototype products is at the centre of our research. We focus on crafting the most compelling designs that we can, and find that in the process new methods and concepts naturally emerge.

Projects are formed around particular situations for design, rather than particular forms of technology or styles of interaction. At the same time, we have an affinity for product design that is reflected in the things we make. We have not pursued screen-based or architectural designs, for instance, but instead have produced a variety of furniture and fittings such as tables, tablecloths and appliances for the home. Often these involve sensors and displays as well as the use of ‘found’ information from the internet that makes our work relevant for ubiquitous computing.

We build our prototype products to a very high level of finish and technical robustness, which allows them to be tested for long periods in everyday life, and to be shown in lengthy exhibitions with minimal maintenance. Currently we are moving towards batch producing prototypes, so that we can gain disseminate 50-100 instances of a given design for extensive field trials.

Below is a selection of case studies drawn from our portfolio of work. Click on the title to download a description of a project in PDF format.
