Process
We do not use a fixed methodology, but improvise using a palette of design-led methods invented in previous projects, and to which we continue to add. These balance playfulness, ambiguity and confusion with precision and exactitude depending on the stage of design. For instance, in early stages of design we have used Cultural Probes – collections of evocative tasks meant to elicit inspirational data – while in later stages we might use precise physical and computer-based modeling to hone our designs.
A balance of accuracy and evocation also characterizes our field tests. We use ethnographic observations and interviews to capture rich descriptions of people’s activities and ideas about our prototypes. This is complemented by the use of cultural commentators such as documentary filmmakers, journalists or fiction writers to capture more opinionated, personal and thought-provoking accounts. We find the two approaches work well together in conveying not only the experiences of particular prototypes, but the meanings they have to their users.
