Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance launches at Goldsmiths
Goldsmiths has launched a Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance, in partnership with the Beijing Dance Academy. Studies at the Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance at Goldsmiths will be based around Mandarin provision at various levels. Teaching will extend across many aspects of Chinese performance and culture, as well as providing opportunities for academic visits and exchanges to explore research and creative projects with the Beijing Dance Academy.

Several Goldsmiths departments across the arts and social sciences are already involved - in particular Theatre and Performance, and Music - in addition to language tuition.

There are around 300 Confucius Institutes worldwide. Their aim is to promote Chinese language and culture, and support Chinese teaching and cultural exchanges. Each institute determines its own specialist programme of activity.

Madame Xu Lin, Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), welcomed Simon McVeigh, Deputy Warden, at the annual conference of Confucius Institutes worldwide to establish a partnership agreement.

Commenting on the launch of the Institute at Goldsmiths, Simon said: "I’m delighted that Goldsmiths is joining the vibrant community of Confucius Institutes worldwide, with a focus on international cultural exchange that is at the heart of our own ethos. We are very much looking forward to building on our strong connections with China and its rich artistic life, working closely with Hanban and the Beijing Dance Academy."

Brazilian arts and humanities students expand academic horizons at Goldsmiths
Fourteen undergraduate students from one of Brazil’s most prestigious universities will come to Goldsmiths this winter to benefit from an international academic experience.

The students, from the arts and humanities faculty at UNICAMP, were selected through the Santander International Mobility Program and will spend ten weeks at Goldsmiths with registration, tuition, airfare, health insurance, accommodation and spending money covered by the bank.

Professor Marcelo Knobel, Dean of Graduate Studies at UNICAMP, said that this model of 'summer school' is a way to ensure students broaden their knowledge and experience of the arts and humanities which are not provided by the Brazilian federal programme ‘Science Without Borders’: "It's the first summer school (summer for Brazil, but winter in London). We are testing this model and it will be interesting to see the return of students, with insight and ideas that allow us to enhance and grow the project for future generations."

Geraint Fox, Head of International Partnerships and Developments at Goldsmiths welcomed the initiative: “This cohort of students will join a growing cohort of students from Brazil and wider Latin America who choose to come to Goldmsiths; I am particularly pleased that the sponsorship from Santander is enabling students who do not traditionally have the opportunity to study abroad to attend Goldsmiths, very much in line with our own commitment to widening access to higher education.”

Gustavo Macedo, a student of social sciences at UNICAMP, said: "This trip is very important to broaden my research and personal experiences. As a social scientist, it is crucial to study international politics to connect with other cultures."
