Sandra was awarded a Goldsmiths Banco Santander Scholarship

"Being awarded the scholarship has greatly facilitated my dream to study in the UK."

Being awarded the Goldsmiths Banco de Santander scholarship has greatly facilitated my dream to study in the UK. It means to take advantage of the opportunities that a city like London has to offer as a global hub. Based in a vibrant location in London, the campus' lively atmosphere provides a mix of different cultural and professional backgrounds, which makes the academic process even more interesting. This experience undoubtedly allows me to grab novel knowledge and practices which will enable me to share and apply my learning to create social value when I return to Colombia.

MA Anthropology & Cultural Politics

"As soon as I read about Goldsmiths I knew I was in front of something particularly different, a place of avant-garde."

I spent more than 3 months reading about anthropology departments and MA programs in the UK to ensure I made the perfect choice for me. As soon as I read about Goldsmiths I knew I was in front of something particularly different, a place of avant-garde. I was happy to confirm that the program and the professors from the anthropology department embody a strong critic spirit and a wide interdisciplinary perspective that address the best of the anthropological towards an understanding of contemporary societies. Although this is not particular for the department, attending conferences, plays and reading film clubs I could realise that this spirit run about all over the place!

MA Screen Documentary

"I came to London searching for open minded teachers who would push me to my highest potential. I found them at Goldsmiths."

I first heard about Goldsmiths through a Colombian friend who had attended as international student while doing her BA back at Los Andes University.  When I was researching for the best media option in the UK, I landed on the Goldsmiths website and remembered all the good references I had received from my friend. I applied to do an MA in Screen Documentary and got in! I was extremely proud of myself. Being at Goldsmiths is a dream come true.

Since arriving I feel my spirit has lifted up again. As well as its high academic standards and the fact I found precisely the Masters I was looking for, I feel constantly challenged and inspired by the arty and creative atmosphere you feel around campus. Its 'edgy' location constantly shows you how real London is, and I love it. It's a metaphor and a reminder that if you want to be a journalist and a good storyteller, you must never forget, no matter how at ease you feel, that the real stories are always outside your comfort zone. When at Goldsmiths you discover the real London! I came to London searching for open minded teachers who would push me to my highest potential. I found them at Goldsmiths.

"The openness of the professors and the motivation and engagement of the students are turning this year into an incredible experience."

Goldsmiths is the inspiring context for exploring the dialog between social sciences and creative practices I expected it to be. The MA in Critical and Creative Analysis, in particular, is giving me a unique flexibility for developing my current interests. The discussions in sociology enable me to understand more profoundly the theoretical debates around cultural memory as well as the role of the visual in academia. At the same time, the courses in screen documentary are a challenging context for my practical work on audiovisual representations of memory.

Overall, the openness of the professors and the motivation and engagement of the students are turning this year into an incredible experience. I am convinced it will provide me with the necessary tools for continuing my research in a PhD as well as to contribute to the efforts of memory construction in Colombia's post-conflict scenario.

"Studying at Goldsmiths has been a remarkable experience."

I am a composer of cross-genre sound and play the Colombian tiple. I have composed music and designed sound for documentaries, dance, and multimedia installations. I have also participated in audiovisual concerts and have been involved in interdisciplinary collaborations with the areas of theatre, fine arts and literature.

I am enrolled in the MMus in Creative Practice. Its transdisciplinary focus have allowed me to experience different creative approaches into the arts while becoming aware about social issues related to the contemporary world. I have found that the Masters resonates with the professional and personal pathway I want to follow. It is a way to continue with my actual process and the possibility of expanding myself to other areas, gaining flexibility to work in different contexts. Studying at Goldsmiths has been a remarkable experience where I have felt supported and have found an open-minded and up-to-date academic community.

MA Photography & Urban Cultures

I continued the previous work I was developing into a deeper symbolism and geometrical analysis about humans, politics and space in Colombia and the world. The long-term project titled 'The Invisible Man, the Invisible City' involves the production of a series of images and written texts about the nature of private and public spaces, with particular reference to artistic practices. This project tries to reflect on the ethical and legal debate on photography and artistic practices. It is complemented with photographic installations and interventions into the urban space, located in different, typical spots of London and imbued with ethnographic experience and practical expertise.
