Latest News

  • Subsidised Stafford Loans will no longer be available for Graduate students effective from 1st July 2012.  The maximum annual entitlement of $20500 remains the same therefore all of this entitlement will be on an unsubsidised basis.
  • The rebates previously applied to the origination fees charged by the US Dept of Education on Direct Loans has been withdrawn with effect from 1st July 2012.  This means that the full origination fee amounts of 1% on Stafford Loans and 4% on Plus Loans will now be applied. 
  • If you need to apply for a visa and are dependent on Federal Aid for proof of funds it is advisable NOT to apply for the visa until you have received a letter confirming your loans and disbursement amounts and dates. 
  • The Dept of Education have announced a Special Loan Consolidation opportunity. This will be only be available between January 17 and June 30 2012 to students that have loans through both the Direct and FFEL programs. If you are eligible you will be contacted directly by a Federal Loan Servicer - NELNET, FedLoan Servicing, Sallie Mae or Great Lakes. Check the Federal Student Aid website for further information.
  • We have a new email address: financialaid@gold.ac.uk. Please use this for all correspondence regarding your Federal Loans

Goldsmiths, University of London is authorised to certify applications for both Federal Direct Loans and Alternative Education (‘Private’) loans. Students are advised to apply for Federal Loans first before applying for private loans. You may borrow up to the ‘Cost of Attendance’, as set by Goldsmiths, each year.

Please note that students studying at schools outside of the USA can apply for Direct Subsidised, Direct Unsubsidised and Direct PLUS loans and are not eligible for PELL Grants or Perkins loans

Opening a Bank Account

It is advisable that you open a UK bank account once you arrive in the UK. You can open a student account at any high street bank. Goldsmiths has a branch of NatWest on campus, and Citibank are able to offer you an account that enables you to transfer money between a UK and US Citibank account.
