Climate and clothing
Temperatures in London vary from an average night temperature of 23° F (-5°C) in January, to daytime temperatures of above 87° F (31°C) in July. Night freezing may occur between mid- October and early May. Daytime freezing is rare. Humidity varies little, from an average of 80% in November, December and January to around 55% in the summer months. Snowfalls sometimes occur from December to March, but rarely last for long. Rainfall is common all the year round. High pollen counts may be registered from April to October. For the latest 5-day weather forecast for London, see the BBC's website (link opens a new browser window).
You may also notice the variation in the hours of daylight between summer and winter. In winter it will get light at about 07.00 and be dark again by 16.00; in summer it will get light at about 04.00 and not get dark until after 22.00.
The weather is changeable so you will need to be equipped with suitable clothing to cover all the possibilities. It will probably be easier and cheaper to buy your clothing for the British climate after you have arrived in London and can judge exactly what you need. However, we strongly recommend that you pack a warm coat or raincoat in your hand luggage for when you arrive in the UK (depending on where you are travelling from), as the contrast from your own climate may seem more noticeable at first. You will also need strong waterproof footwear for the damp and cold weather from October to March, but you can buy this cheaply in London.
One more thing about the weather: the British are always talking about it. You can often start a conversation quite easily by referring to the weather!
In general, dress on campus is very informal and embraces all tastes and fashions. Dress is also casual for outings to pubs, restaurants and theatres, but some night clubs will require a smarter dress code. If you are unsure how to dress for a particular occasion, please don’t be afraid to ask.
