Instructor-led classroom based training

We are planning to introduce the latest version of the Microsoft Office suite of applications (Word, PowerPoint and Excel) over the course of the next academic session. Although the broad functionality is similar in each of these applications to our current version (Office 2004), there is a new look, which might feel strange to start with. Experience at other universities suggests that this is readily overcome through training.

We will be creating a separate page for each application we provide in College with links to guides showing you how to make the change from our current version to the new version. There will also short online courses which you can work your way through in about half an hour. Have a look at the Windows versions if you want to see what we plan.

The Ribbon

The most significant change from Office 2004 is the way you select commands. This has been completely reorganised into a 'Ribbon'. It combines the Formatting Palette and Elements Gallery from previous versions of Office, and gives you quick and convenient access to the features and tools that you use the most. This short video introduces you to it.

Certification

We will be introducing the opportunity to get your Microsoft Office IT skills certified through the Microsoft IT Academy programme. This will be launched during the next academic session. Unfortunately this is only available for the Windows versions of Microsoft Office. The applications are becoming increasingly similar so it might be worth while considering this if you are a Mac user.
