Colour Printing in the Rutherford Building

Author: David Riddle.
Version: 2.1 February 2007

IT Services offer a charged colour printing facility for Macintosh users. This is available from those Macintosh systems which have scanners attached - currently eight computers. There is no facility for PC users to print in colour at present.

Printers

Jobs can be sent to these printers only from Macintosh systems which have a scanner attached. Most of these are located in the bay opposite the Help Desk (benches J and K), but there are others elsewhere in the Open Access area and in RB103, the Macintosh teaching room. You cannot send colour print jobs from any other computer.

Print jobs that require colour should be directed to one of two colour print queues named ISC Phaser 850 Queue and ISC Phaser 8400 Queue.

Payment

Jobs sent to these printers are not printed immediately. You will need to go to the Computer Help Desk, who will release the job for printing when the page charge of 50p is paid.

This means that work cannot be collected at times when the Computer Help Desk is closed, although jobs can be sent to the queue(s) at any time, then paid for and printed at a later date.

Papers

The colour printers are capable of duplex (back-to-back) printing, although this is not advisable on standard A4 paper stock.

It is possible to use light card, transparencies and also coated papers on the devices. Specialist papers are available, but must be purchased in advance by the user as the Help Desk do not hold stock.

Coated (photographic) paper that is stated as being suitable for ink-jet printers has been tested, does work, and does not appear to damage the printer, but the nature of the printing process is very different from ink-jet, and the longevity of pages printed on this type of paper cannot be guaranteed.

Problems

All problems with the colour printers should be reported to the Computer Help Desk. As with all printers in the Rutherford Building, users are permitted to replenish empty paper trays, but must not:

  • attempt to clear paper jams
  • remove or interfere with toner cartridges
  • switch printers off.
