The Large Scale Immersive Audio Experiment

Workshop: Thursday 8 October, 2-3.30pm, Richard Hoggart Building, RHB room 167 (Recital Room), Goldsmiths

Presented by: Media & Communications Screenshool, Music Department Sound Practice Research Unit, Duran Audio and Illustrious

The project is designed to provide an opportunity for the students at Goldsmiths to develop content for an exciting new sound technology and to have this work exhibited in the College green for a period of three weeks. The project will raise awareness of the emerging field of 3D audio and of how modern loudspeaker technologies can deliver the precisely controlled field of coverage required to effectively portray a 3D audio soundscape.

The Large Scale Immersive Audio Experiment will provide an installation of Duran Audio Intellivox DSP controlled Beam Steering Loudspeakers in the open air at four corners of the College Green. The content will be spacialized using Illustrious’ 3D Audioscape Software platform. A training workshop and seminar will be given by Illustrious’ Martyn Ware, providing the necessary knowledge for the students to create their content. (www.illustriouscompany.co.uk)

The content creation side of this could be presented as a competition where the prize winners will work with Martyn Ware to spatially place their content within the 3D audio space that will be created by the Duran Audio loudspeakers in the College Green. The Large Scale Immersive Audio Experiment goes live on Tuesday 20th October.

Working together to bring this exciting new medium of expression to Goldsmiths, Duran Audio and Illustrious will benefit from the creative collaboration between Goldsmith’s Screenschool  and Sound Practice Research and the technologies each company is supplying in this high profile ground breaking project.
