Barima Adu-Asamoa

Barima Adu-Asamoa, is a full time PhD. student in Media studies. He is a filmmaker, poet, writer and photographer. He obtained his Bachelors degree at the University of the Arts, London and lectured at Ghana Institute of Journalism, University of Ghana. He works in multi-media genres as an artist; his work provides a critical platform to interrogate histories and contemporary issues relevant to Africa and African Diaspora. He was commissioned by BBC Channel Four Television (UK) for the Screenplay ‘NIFA’. Barima is the producer- director of the documentary film ‘AFRICANS IN WORLD WAR II’ and the television series ‘LOVE STORIES’ for METRO TV Ghana. His major Photographic work ‘AHUDA-STREAMS OF HEALING THOUGHTS’ – opens in London. Barima is a poet (‘A Weeviled Harvest,’ 2006) and a freelance journalist. His research interest includes a range of topics in the areas of film aesthetics, cinema, text and image, critical cultural and social theories.

His PhD. thesis entitled Genres in Nollywood: The Good, the Bad and the Audience, explores the phenomenon of Nollywood video movies with a particular focus in establishing its emerging genres. The research also situates and examines the locus of Nollywood audiences both locally and within the African Diaspora.
