Loubna Bijdiguen
Loubna is a first-year PhD Media student undertaking research entitled, 'Orientalism Continues: Representations of Muslim Women in Contemporary Documentary Films'. Long constrained to the fields of literature, orientalism seems to be predominant in depictions of 'other women' from 'other cultures'. This acquires greater importance due to the rise of the 'threat of Islam' and the further 'otherisation' of Muslim women. Loubna aims to combine a post-colonial/feminist approach to look at some documentary films produced following 9/11. She will be critically evaluating the validity of contemporary post-colonial/feminist perspectives insofar as depictions of women are concerned. Loubna's central focus will be the 'metaphor of the veil' and its relation with war.
