Paolo Gerbaudo
Paolo's thesis is entitled, 'Cartographies of the Movement: Alternative maps as means of political expression and tool for coordination and action in digital art and activism'.His research aims at analysing the work of a series of new media artists and activists employing original forms of geographic and cognitive maps as a radical means of political expression. Paolo will define the functional and cultural position of these groups and practices within what is called the "movement of the movements". He will also assess these groups on their ability to answer the movement's call for new tools of orientation, coordination and political action.
With two other artists, David Boardman and Diego Mometti, Paolo has developed Netzfunk, an open network involved in artistic research around locative media, hypertextual literature, installation art and political art. Netzfunk's projects have been hosted and presented at different events including the Bienniales of Turin (Italy) and Santiago del Chile. The main purpose of the network is to create connections with different people, organisations and places in order to develop creative processes aimed at subverting environments and interfering with materiality.
