Alice MacGill, who was a student in the Department of Music at Goldsmiths from 2000 - 2004, lost her life in the 2004 Asian Tsunami.

The Music for Alice Trust was established in 2006 in Alice’s memory, and supports the musical education of young people in a variety of ways.  Due to the generosity of the Trust the Department is able to make available a bursary of £750 to be used towards funding postgraduate study on one of our masters courses.

The award is only available to students who have successfully completed an undergraduate programme within the Department (in Music, Popular Music, or Music Computing), and who have been offered a place on one of our taught postgraduate programmes (MA or MMus).  These studies need not be contiguous; that is, students who are returning to the department some time after their undergraduate studies are as eligible as those who are progressing directly to a postgraduate programme without a break.  The award can be used to support studies across the entire range of masters programmes offered wholly within the Department of Music.

This year, applications for the award will be accepted until 9 August.  The successful applicant will be advised by 30 August.  The trustees of the Music for Alice Trust will make the final decision as to whom the award should be offered.

In order to be considered for the award, please write directly to the Departmental Administrator, Kim Mulhall, indicating:

  • Which particular masters course you wish to pursue, and how this will support your personal and/or career development;
  • A brief CV indicating your achievements to date, both inside and outside of the department;
  • Why you feel you are a particularly deserving recipient of the award;
  • If available, please also provide a transcript of your undergraduate studies in the department, or a similar breakdown of marks received during your time here.

Letters of application should be marked ‘Music For Alice Award’, and sent to:
Kim Mulhall
Senior Administrator
Department of Music

Alternatively you may email your application to Kim Mulhall with a message header marked ‘Music For Alice Award’.  Please do NOT contact the Trust directly; any approach made in this way will render the application void.

All applications must be received by 5 pm on Monday 9 August.
