Music Education

Goldsmiths Music Department is proud of its longstanding success in preparing students for a career in music education.  In response to changing government policies, we are developing joint training with Goldsmiths Department of Educational Studies. This training will allow students to develop pedagogic skills while completing either undergraduate or postgraduate degrees in music.

Current plans:

1. As part of a new third-year option, Educational Studies will offer training in early learning educational theory to undergraduate finalist in music and in educational studies. These classes, currently part of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), will help to facilitate fast-track entry into a music teaching career. Theoretical training will be supported by the new module’s accredited work experience in local schools.

2.  The Educational Studies department currently runs a Teacher Centre providing post-graduate student progression through to PGCE, MA and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) educational studies. The Music Department plans to integrate selected MA/MMus modules with those offered at the Teacher Centre, and work with Educational Studies to develop new music teaching courses. Integrated and new courses will be available to graduate students of both departments.

3. The Music Department is currently building GoldMusNet – a communication network and project planning team –  to support Goldsmiths music alumni and local music education at the secondary school level.
