We offer a wide ranging PhD programme including Composition, Sonic Arts and Performance. We are one of the largest postgraduate music communities in the UK, with around 70 PhD students. Read more about Music Research Degrees.

The Department is at the forefront of music as a creative, cultural and social process. We offer a rich and supportive environment for doctoral research. Regular conferences, symposia, concerts and workshops provide students with a variety of platforms to present work and explore new ideas. Our students are supported by Goldsmiths Graduate School and the Institute of Musical Research.

The University of London is one of the most distinguished universities in the world; and this, allied to our dynamic and forward-looking departmental ethos, makes us an ideal place to undertake a PhD. 

In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, 70% of staff publications were described as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. The department's research environment was described as 'world leading'. We have several specialist research centres with international reach. The Department has supported AHRC funded Fellows in the Creative and Performing Arts, as well as a number of PhD students with AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Awards.
