With building work now well underway on Goldsmiths, University of London’s new contemporary art gallery, the hunt is on for an ambitious and innovative Director to lead the venture.

The 1,000m2 gallery, designed by Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble around the Grade II-listed Laurie Grove Baths and the building’s derelict Victorian water tanks, is expected to host its first public exhibition in January 2018.

Goldsmiths is looking for a Director who will build a distinctive and internationally respected programme of exhibitions, residencies and events.

Based within the world-renowned Department of Art, the Director will have responsibility for determining the gallery’s programme, in collaboration with the venue’s advisory board and steering group. The Director will also hold operational responsibility for fundraising, supported by Department of Art and Development Team.

Open to members of the public throughout the week, the gallery will throw open the gates of the campus to the local community and the world in a new and exciting way.

All Goldsmiths staff, students and neighbours will soon benefit from having a first-rate centre for the visual arts on their doorstep. The gallery will be at the heart of a creative community devoted to cutting edge analysis and innovation in the arts.

Hosting global resident artists in a university environment is a unique model for a gallery. It is hoped that the academic environment will stimulate inventive and original artwork, while simultaneously contributing to new research.

Goldsmiths has played an important part in sustaining the dynamism of the London art world, as successful alumni – including seven Turner Prize winners and 24 nominees - illustrate. The gallery will solidify this position by bringing the art world onto campus.

Applications for the position of Director close on November 28th.
