In just a few days time you’ll be able to open the first doors on your advent calendars, so we’ve rounded up the best events to see in the first week of December.

From food and film festivals to ice-skating and interactive design, we’ve done the hard work for you and lined up some events to glide you into next month.  Put on your skates, here are some brilliant things to do this week.

Glide: your way to an outdoor ice rink

Whether you’re into ice-skating or prefer to watch from the heated sidelines with a cheese fondue, it’s definitely worth making a visit to Canary Wharf. This ice rink is one of the biggest in London and is open all the way into the New Year. Photo credit: Julie Kertesz

Buy: a unique gift you wont find anywhere else

Cockpit Arts are hosting a Christmas Open Studio at their Deptford workspaces next week, giving you a chance to take a sneak peak behind the scenes of talented designer-makers. Struggling to find that perfect gift for someone special? You can also purchase beautiful one of a kind gifts directly from independent designers.

See: the world through a series of films

Hosted by the Centre for Postcolonial Studies, ‘Films from the Underside’ kicks off on Monday with a series of contemporary political documentaries that’ll take you on a journey from Occupy Wall Street and the Sudanese Civil War to Mexico’s missing students and Hong Kong’s street protests. All screenings are free and can be booked through eventbrite.

Experience: Japan at the Tobacco Docks

Hyper Japan Christmas Market is making a home of the Tobacco docks this weekend and has stacks on fun on offer for all. Expect and explosion of street food, musical entertainment, Japanese fashion and even origami-style gift wrapping lessons! Pre-book your tickets on their website.

Explore: the creations of our MA Interaction Design students

Head over to St James Hatcham Church Gallery this week and take a look at the final work presented by this year’s MA Interactive Design students. Look forward to a wide range of work that includes a study of the preservation of urban bees.
