Welcome
Members of this group are concerned with the mechanisms underlying different cognitive and motivational disorders acquired following organic brain injury or associated with neuropsychiatric disorders, and with psychosocial outcomes. One linking theme of this research group is an interest in investigating effectiveness of rehabilitation programmes and possible predictive factors for a patient’s functional recovery. Some on-going projects are looking at the impact of specific rehabilitation techniques (such as biofeedback) on visuo-spatial disorders, at the effects of ECT (Electroconvulsive therapy) for major depression on cognitive function, and at the impact of acquired brain injury on awareness for illness, on affect and quality of life.
Because of the nature of our studies, this group has strong and well-established collaborations with clinicians and clinical centres all over the UK, in the USA, and in several European countries. Members of this group also have academic and research commitments linked to our MSc in Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience , which has been developed in partnership with the Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre and Neurodisability Service (BBIRCNS). Moreover, Professor Powell organises and facilitates a peer supervision network for several clinical neuropsychologists working at a number of neurological rehabilitation units in London.
