Open Book Project Services
The Goldsmiths Open Book project based at Goldsmiths, sets out to raise aspiration, recruit, prepare and support individuals from amongst the 'hardest to reach' communities including those from offending and addiction backgrounds into education, from pre-access through to and beyond undergraduate level study.
The project works as part of the Aspire Aimhigher South East London Partnership in collaboration with agencies active in the criminal justice/addiction field. Open Book works to encourage those that would not usually consider Higher Education to return to study. The project prepares students for Further and Higher Education level programmes, helps to find appropriate courses for them and then supports them throughout the duration of their study and beyond.
Open Book students are able to attend return to study short courses and regular drop in sessions to assist them with personal and academic matters. Personal support is at the heart of Open Book and we provide a 24 hour academic and pastorial support line for registered students.
We have a presence at The London School of Economics and Political Science, University of Greenwich and works closely London Southbank University.
The project is also working on various projects in the area of Kent in conjunction with Greenwich University to provide a service to get children in Secure Training Centres and Young Offenders Institutions in Medway and further afield in Further Education college on release, with particular emphasis on students with Dyslexia. This work is being funded by the JJ Charitable Trust.
Our award winning project has an excellent track record of attracting students. Open Book recruits students onto courses at Goldsmiths and a number of universities via our outreach work and dedicated back to study programmes. The projects aim is to support our participants to bridge a route to personal and professional attainment through education.
We hold rolling courses in Creative Writing, Drama and Philosophy for our Open Book students on Wednesdays and Fridays at Goldsmiths. The sessions are open to all of our students and newcomers, to offer experience of education and to identify suitable provision in Further and Higher Education.Rolling Sessions
The sessions encourage and aid students to reacquaint themselves with studying, provide one to one support for students that have progressed to HE and FE or simply be a meeting point for students to mentor each other.
Drop in Session and One to One Support
The Open Book Project also provides 1-2-1 Dyslexia sessions including academic and personal support to open book students via our drop in sessions and individual academic support.
Workshops and Outreach Work
The Open Book Project provides bespoke workshops, taster sessions and talks to champion the benefits of education and the opportunities and possibilities that are available for ‘none traditional students’ to encourage wider participation in Higher and Further Education.
The workshops, inspirational talks and student recruitment drives are held and run by the Open Book Team, which of course includes and wouldn't exist without our students.
We refer Open Book students to Further and Higher Educational facilities and other support services as appropriate. We also accept referrals and support requests from other agencies including probation services, addiction support agencies, community groups, prisons and education organisations.
