This course studies the theory behind jazz and contemporary music’s use of melody (including shape, range and rhythmic structure), harmony (including chords, scales, chord progressions and substitutions).
You will also study aspects of arranging such as instrumental ranges and transposition, rhythm section notation and score layout. Each term culminates with the completion of your own composition/arranging project. You should be able to read treble and bass clef and have a fluent grasp of chord formation and function.
