Explore London’s social and cultural past and how that shapes the present city. Drawing on a range of sources, we address issues such as transport, education, leisure, religious observance, crime, popular political beliefs, paid and unpaid work, housing and sport. While learning will be led by weekly teaching, you will be encouraged to participate and develop your own interests in a guided manner. You can gain skills in researching, critical reading, note-taking, group work, information technology and independent study. Beyond the classroom, we will explore local history and the importance of the Thames for East London with archive and museum visits. Though not accredited, the course gives you the opportunity to complete a supervised project on a topic of your choice, for which written feedback will be given. The summer timing means you can apply to continue studying in the autumn term if you wish, and guidance can be arranged through the College.
