Certificate for Postgraduate Study in Music

This course has been designed specifically for international graduates. It offers a preparatory period of study in which you develop the practical and academic skills needed to study at Master’s degree (MMus) level.

Length:
1 year full-time.
Applying: Admission is normally by interview or submission of appropriate material in support of your application.

Entrance requirements:

You should normally have an undergraduate degree of at least second class standard in a relevant subject. The Certificate is for graduates whose first language is not English: you need a minimum score of 5.5 in IELTS or an equivalent English Language qualification.

You can take it either as a self-standing Certificate or as ideal preparation for further postgraduate study in music at Goldsmiths or elsewhere. There are three pathways: the first two specialise in Performance and Composition, while the third offers preparation for a number of other MMus programmes. In all pathways you take courses in English Language Development, if appropriate, and English for Academic Purposes, in addition to the courses below.

What you study

Performance and Related Studies Pathway: Advanced Classical Performance; Research Essay; two courses from a recommended list of BMus advanced modules.

Composition Pathway: Composition for Ensemble in Residence; four courses from a recommended list of BMus advanced courses including Analysis and New Music, Live Electronics and Phonography.

Other Pathways: Contemporary Music Studies, Ethnomusicology, Historical Musicology or MA Arts Administration (Music Pathway). Research Essay; four courses from a recommended list of advanced courses including Analysis and New Music; Minimalism and Postminimalism; Principles of Advanced Historical Studies.

Assessment

Coursework in terms 1-3 and examination papers and recital (if applicable) in term 3. Your English Language proficiency is examined in terms 1 and 2.
