The MA in Digital Media is unique in its combination of practical and theoretical approaches to contemporary media and technology.
It is designed to help you understand digital transformations in media, culture and society and apply this understanding in practice, in the media and creative industries and in further research. You will be equipped with skills that can be applied to current and future developments in digital media, social media, computing and other aspects of technology.
MA Digital Media students (current) are eligible to apply for a 12-week paid internship at Google to start 2 April 2012.
Potential applicants should contact the programme convenor in the first instance.
Here's what Google have said about the internship:

Students who study on this established and exciting degree benefit from the experience and expertise of one of the world’s leading media and communications departments. You are taught by theorists and practitioners of international standing: Sarah Kember, Joanna Zylinska, Graham Young, Tony Dowmunt, Angela Phillips, Julian Henriques and David Morley.
The department is also currently host to the renowned philosopher of media and technology, Bernard Stiegler and students will have access to his course in Media Philosophy as well as priority access to the innovative and popular option After New Media. Designed to compliment the MA Digital Media, this course provides a framework for thinking about the current media environment as well as future forms of human and computer interaction.
Our programme provides a theory and practice pathway and prepares students for work in the following areas:
Our students have access to state of the art facilities including well-equipped lecture and seminar rooms, exhibition spaces, computer facilities and digital media suites.
The MA in Digital Media educates aspiring media practitioners and academics as well as early and mid-career professionals who seek to reflect on their roles in a structured and stimulating learning environment designed to give all students up-to-the-minute knowledge of digital media and the skills to apply that knowledge to future developments.
We provide graduates with skills that are cutting edge: in the critical analysis and/or creative production of digital media; in the disciplinary knowledge and conceptual frameworks necessary for current and future forms of media and technology; in the awareness of how digital media and technologies are re-shaping society from the ways we communicate (through social media and web 2.0) to the increasingly ‘smart’ environments in which we live.
The MA Digital Media has been redefining media theory and practice since 2004. Our students become proficient in:
This is what some of our former students have said about the degree:
"The MA in Digital Media helps you embrace all the sociopolitical challenges that digitisation carries within it. By giving you the opportunity to select courses from several departments you get a broad knowledge of issues from the LHC project to the rise of the creative class in the '00s. I particularly worked on how writing changes from print to online and, in collaboration with the MA in Journalism, created humlondon.com, an online magazine that critically evaluated the transfer and distribution of a print magazine’s content on the web and exploited the endless opportunities of interactivity and convergence."
"Having studied the MA Digital Media whilst working full time, I was pleasantly surprised by how accommodating the tutors were to my schedule, allowing me to study around my professional commitments. The MA was a challenging and rewarding programme that touched upon a wide range of contemporary topics. It has greatly broadened my knowledge of the subject area and allowed me to develop and pursue my own research interests."

MA Digital Media students have priority access to the pioneering option After New Media, which explores the themes of self mediation, ethical mediation and intelligent mediation, and develops a framework for thinking about 'life' after new media.
Our students go on to work in the media industries, advertising, marketing and PR. A number also go on to study for a PhD with us in the department or abroad.
The MA offers two pathways. Pathway 1 is a theory programme where you learn about developments in digital media and technology from a wide range of perspectives. Pathway 2 is a theory and practice programme where you improve your skills, understanding and experience in one of the following areas: documentary; image making; journalism; writing.
Two core courses will draw on the history, sociology, philosophy and anthropology of the media (offering contextualised analyses of media technologies such as the internet, mobile phone, television, photography and film), and will develop themes of technology, power, politics and subjectivity. Pathway 1 students also take options up to a value of 60 CATS (2-4 courses) provided by the Departments of Media and Communications, Anthropology, English and Comparative Literature, and Sociology, and the Centre for Cultural Studies. Pathway 2 students take option courses up to a value of 30 CATS (1-2 courses) plus the Digital Media Practice unit.
