MA in Filmmaking - Additional information

Project Costs

2 sound students

Most of the shooting exercises are photographed on Super-16mm film / some are shot on digital video. The Media and Communications department provides the facilities for all shooting exercises. We also cover filmstock & processing costs for all shooting exercises other than the main project. We are not able to cover budgetary items such as transport, catering, props and actors' expenses.

Student producers coordinate the raising of the budgets for the main projects in conjunction with their filmmaking teams. This budget is likely to amount to several thousand pounds. Each team member is expected to contribute towards fundraising. Many groups opt to contribute an agreed amount of money each towards the cost of this high production value film.

Completed graduation films are premiered in central London, prior to being entered into worldwide film festivals.

“By studying this programme I have learned more than I could possibly have imagined; not only about Sound Design, but about all aspects of Filmmaking from Camera Operation to Picture Editing. The shooting exercises on the course helped me tremendously in preparing myself for our graduation film. I learned how to operate professionally, how to prioritise a multitude of tasks and how to be extremely organized under pressure. At the same time, I gained an overall appreciation of every other team member’s responsibilities. The combination of exterior, studio and location filming and the variety of genres I encountered has enabled me to thrive under a variety of shooting conditions. When I started the course, I had little appreciation about how much work is involved by so many people. I now realize what goes into the making of a film and how dedicated everyone involved needs to be.”

“The most important aspect of making our film proved to be our thorough preparation. Testing ideas and analysing our script thoroughly enabled us to enter the shooting phase with a knowledge base solid enough to address the issues that occurred during filming. In this way, we were able to respond to restricted location accessibility, scheduling changes and countless unexpected obstacles. Moreover, having put so much effort into the creation of the shooting documents, we were essentially liberated from them. Hence, we were in a strong position to make informed last-minute decisions and implement changes, which virtually always improved the narrative of our film, and resulted in a more engaging experience for our audience.”

Mia Meyer
Student Filmmaker / Cinematographer

“Creative ideas and solutions arise in situations of pressure and challenge; in situations where people have the possibility to step up, express themselves and feel that their contribution is important. Our team was determined and ready to overcome problems together and find solutions whenever needed. We conquered the challenges that were placed in front of us, and we can all be proud of what we achieved in the making of our film.”
