Developing Cross-Platform Projects

Short credit-bearing course that can lead to an MA in Professional Media Practice

The course will enable participants to understand and deliver cross-platform projects with confidence. You will:

  • Meet key broadcast industry producers and pitch to commissioners
  • Become more flexible and employable, developing a wide range of up-to-date cross platform skills that can be applied to your chosen career
  • Learn by doing, having the opportunity to develop, present and deliver an assigned digital media project as part of a team
  • Understand the opportunities presented by digital media and how best to exploit them
  • Respond to the rapidly changing media environment more effectively
  • Gain Master's level (M) credits which can be used to build your own tailored postgraduate qualification

Learning outcomes

Having completed this course, you will be expected to be able to:

  • Review and critically appraise the relevant body of knowledge in cross platform techniques
  • Produce and present work which demonstrates a critical awareness of cross platform production, including creative development, business models and audience engagement
  • Consider and reflect upon issues relevant to your own professional practice in cross platform techniques

Key content

Learning will be centred on the latest developments in cross-platform technologies and practice in broadcast. Key themes that will be covered include:

  • Creative cross-platform development
  • Business models
  • Social media, social TV and second screens
  • Multiplatform production and project processes
  • Commissioning strategies
  • Marketing, distribution and communication – how to reach your audience
Course delivery

To achieve this, participants are encouraged to share ideas, knowledge and experiences. The programme is delivered by the team of professional digital media partners and practitioners. It will be a process of active participation and learning by doing that will provide participants with the opportunity to develop present and deliver their assigned collaborative multiplatform projects in teams.   

The climax of the course will be a Dragon's Den-style presentation where you will pitch your projects to leading cross media figures from the broadcaster sector.

You will receive one-to-one sessions, exercises and feedback from the course tutor and learn to practise critical evaluation of your own work in relation to the course learning outcomes. The online environment will deploy state of the art social networking software that will enable team working, forums and peer support.

Industry figures taking part will include producers and commissioners from the independent sector including indies such as Endemol, Fresh One and Illumina, media agencies such as Mediacom and broadcasters, the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV.

Mike Flood Page from multiplatform production company Illumina Digital – with the Goldsmiths Skillset Media Academy. This partnership will provide the industry practioners/experts that will bring you access to the very latest thinking on the demands of the cross platform domain.

When, where and how much?

The next course will start with two full days on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 October 2012 at Goldsmiths followed by one Wednesday evening session a week between 10 October and 28 November, these will combine face-to-face and webinar delivery. Sessions will take the form of a lecture or presentation by the course tutor or a visiting speaker, together with a workshop. You will have access to a Virtual Learning Environment and social networking software. The course is delivered at Goldsmiths, University of London in New Cross, south east London. The course costs £900, with an Early Bird reduced price of £800 if you book by 24 August 2012.

Who should take this course?

Media professionals, executives, producers, assistant producers, project and operations managers, and other production team members of TV, digital media, interactive companies and freelancers who are currently engaged in or aim to address the areas of multiplatform editorial content, design, development and the commissioning of digital multiplatform project commissions for broadcast and corporate markets.

Entry requirements

This course is open to media professionals with an undergraduate degree and the required work experience in a relevant industry (normally a minimum of two years); and to non-graduates with significant and relevant work experience (normally 5 years) who can demonstrate an ability to both complete and benefit from the course.
