Areas in which we currently offer MPhil/PhD supervision include computational creativity; generative music systems; computer vision; interactions between art, digital media and technology; adaptive hypermedia systems; intelligent agent theories; neural computation; genetic algorithms; artificial intelligence. See also details of staff research interests.
You are welcome to arrange to visit the Department to discuss your proposal before you apply; we strongly advise you to contact us before completing the ‘Research Outline’ section of the application form.
Please see Research degrees for information about starting your research, upgrading to PhD registration, and submitting your thesis. We design an individual research programme to suit your particular topic, and you meet your supervisor regularly for guidance and monitoring of your progress. We put particular emphasis on your ability to discuss your work orally and to present it in writing, so you give seminars within the Department from time to time. All students have a joint meeting with the Postgraduate Convenor once a term to discuss postgraduate issues.
The Department has its own micro-computer laboratory, shared office accommodation, and networked personal computers for research students. You will have the opportunity to attend postgraduate courses and seminars throughout the University of London, as well as meetings of the British Computer Society. We encourage everyone to attend the regular departmental research seminars and workshops. There are also opportunities in tutoring undergraduates.
Assessment
