Careers in teaching

Teaching is a demanding but fulfilling profession which needs you to have – or to develop – certain key values, skills and aptitudes. You must:

  • like working with children and young people, be able to empathise with them and seek to promote the development of the whole child
  • have enthusiasm for teaching and a commitment to the educational process
  • be able to communicate sensitively and effectively and to work constructively with others
  • have the ability to engage in critical self-evaluation and continuous professional development
  • be open-minded and have the flexibility to consider alternatives, welcome possibilities for change and innovation, and be prepared to take risks in developing effective practice
  • be committed to exploring the ways in which practices can discriminate against different groups, and be willing and able to identify and contest these practices, both at a personal and professional level.
