Bernardine Everisto and Andrea Stuart Part 1

Andrea Stuart

In conversation together, and in support of the new MA Black British Writing, Bernardine and Andrea discuss the roles of women writers in reforming subject matter, and perspectives on literature, with readings. Award-winning Black British writers Bernardine Evaristo and Andrea Stuart delve beneath the known stories to produce sparkling work through a panoply of black-centring perspectives. As Andrea writes, ‘My debt of honour has been to reconstruct […] stories, black and white, and bring them to vivid life’. In flipping a whole historical framework to reimagine Europeans enslaved by Africans, in Blonde Roots, Bernardine’s other work likewise employs and redeploys the facts and fictions of histories and herstories. Their writing spans prose fiction, biography, verse novels and memoir, crossing generic borders with ease, to highlight and reveal unexpected angles to the complex stories of black people’s heritages and legacies for British culture.
