Menz receives funding for migration and privatization research

Dr Georg Menz has won a British Academy Small Research Grant for a project examining the implications of the privatization of migration control. The project will explore the political and economic dimensions and implications of the "outsourcing" of migration control, for example to airlines, private security companies and trucking companies. It will involve field work in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States.

Current debates on migration often focus on the question of state sovereingty, yet few scholarly accounts examine the implications of the deliberate transfer of control in immigration detention and management to private sector companies, which themselves are not necessarily willing agents.
