MPhil/PhD bursary available for September 2010

Department of Politics
Goldsmiths, University of London
One non-teaching MPhil/PhD bursary

One full-time bursary is available for home/EU students enrolled or seeking to enrol for an MPhil/PhD in Politics at Goldsmiths, University of London.  The award is tenable for up to three years from 1 September 2010, on an annual basis, with performance subject to review in June of each academic year prior to renewal.  Each award will include a general bursary (£11,178.80 in 2009-10 to be uprated in 2010-11 in line with the cost of living) which will not be liable to income tax or National Insurance, and the tuition fee (£3,390 in 2009-10, uprated in 2010-11) which would otherwise be payable by the student.  The bursaries are defined as ‘non-teaching’ in that the payment does not include any payment for teaching, and no teaching is to be undertaken without the permission of the supervisor.  However, where teaching is undertaken, additional payment will be made at the college’s Visiting Tutor rate of approximately £37 per hour.

Applications should have prior degree(s) in Politics or a cognate discipline. The successful applicant will assist with the administration and organisation of the Centre for Postcolonial Studies (www.gold.ac.uk/postcolonial-studies/) for no more than five hours per week, for which additional hourly payment will be made.  Applicants whose work relates to post-colonial politics and/or theory or critical Asian studies may be given preference, but we welcome applications from those whose research matches other areas of strength in Goldsmiths Politics, including the relationship between Art and politics; International politics; European politics; British politics; Political Economy; and Political Theory.

Applicants will be assessed against the following criteria:

• The overall importance and quality of research proposal.
• The applicant’s ability to carry out that research based on qualifications and experience.
• The ability of the department to offer appropriate supervision and a suitable intellectual environment for the research, with possible preference given to applicants working on some aspect of postcolonial theory.
• The likelihood of the applicant completing a PhD within the period of award.

Consideration will also be given to applicants’ ability to contribute to teaching within the department, and their ability to contribute to the administration and organisation of the Centre for Postcolonial Studies.

Applications should be made as follows:

1. By 12 noon on Fri 19th March 2010, applicants should be:
