Biographical information

I joined the Department in 2008 and am currently also a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Political Ideologies in Oxford <http://www.politics.ox.ac.uk/index.php/profile/simon-griffiths.html>.

I divide my time between academia and public policy and was formerly Senior Policy Advisor at the British Academy (the UK’s national body for the humanities and social sciences), where I was involved in setting up their Policy Centre. I was also a Senior Research Fellow at the Social Market Foundation, where I headed the organisation's work on public service reform. Before that I have worked as a parliamentary researcher, taught at the London School of Economics and worked for the sociologist, Anthony Giddens.

I have a PhD and Masters from LSE and an undergraduate degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford.

As well as publishing on politics and public policy, I have written for The Independent, Times, The Guardian and many journals, and have appeared on television and radio, and in the national and international press.

Teaching

I currently co-convene the undergraduate course, Themes and Issues in British Politics Since 1945, and the internship programmes for MA International Studies, BA International Studies and MA Contemporary British Politics.

Areas of supervision

I would be interested in supervising students in, amongst other things, contemporary British politics, political parties, the public services or the recent history of British political thought.

Research interests

My research is on the recent history of UK political thought, focusing on the main political parties, debates about the market between left and right, and on public service reform in education and health.
