Ed Randall studied Sociology and Social Administration at Durham University before going on to the London School of Economics to complete a Masters degree in Social Work and Social Administration. He trained and qualified as a nurse at St. Thomas' Hospital, London before becoming a university teacher. Apart from teaching and researching politics and social policy he has served as an elected member of a London Borough Council (from 1982 to 1998) and has extensive knowledge of local government policy-making and the administration of social welfare services (including housing, personal social services and education). He is currently the Deputy Head of Politics and Senior Tutor for the Politics Department at Goldsmiths University of London.
Teaching
Ed Randall is responsible for convening and teaching several undergraduate courses: Politics and Welfare, Risk and Politics, and contributes to Themes and Issues in British Politics as well as sharing the responsibility for teaching the introductory unit Political Economy and Public Policy. He also convenes and teaches a Master’s course entitled Politics and Welfare (in Britain and Europe) .
Areas of supervision
Ed Randall supervises graduate work in health policy; European Union regulatory governance and health related policy; liberal democratic thought and Liberal Democratic politics in contemporary Britain; risk, food and politics; and, local governance and social welfare services.
Research interests
Ed Randall’s research interests include health policy (particularly the health related policies of the European Union), local government finance and policy-making, liberal political thought, and the politics of risk. His published work deals with all these areas. His current research is focussed on the politics of risk in relation to food safety; he is also pursuing a long-standing interest in the development of electronic resources that complement conventional pedagogy in the teaching of politics and social policy.
