What our students have to say about us

Natalie Marr, BA in Fine Art & History of Art

I applied to study the Fine Art and History of Art joint honours degree at Goldsmiths knowing that this was the only place I wanted to study. Here you're not simply writing essays and doing a lot of reading and looking, but are challenged to develop yourself and your ideas through class discussion, debates, presentations and screenings.

The atmosphere here is great too; the tutors are really supportive and passionate about the work that they do, and there is always something going on between students that you can get involved in. Moving from North-East England to London was really daunting, and also the thought of coming to such a reputed university, but it has been amazing for branching out, and finding that I have so many other interests that I can pursue in both the uni and the city. There is always something happening here and you're never bored; there are evening lectures, visiting artists and practitioners, fundraising events, exhibitions, societies, and of course the nightlife and general kaleidoscopic nature of London keep everything fresh and exciting.

Adam Sharp, BMus in Music

I’m a second year Music student. I decided to come to Goldsmiths to study music as I wanted to study in London because of the opportunities for a musician on offer; from concerts to see, concert opportunities and the quality of visiting tutors. Whilst being based in London the College also holds a community feel that you get from a campus university due to everything being based in New Cross. When I looked around Goldsmiths on my open day tour, I felt this community feel and the department had a contemporary appeal to it and a relaxing atmosphere, which made me feel welcome.

Claire Baigent, BA in Education, Culture & Society and PGCE (Primary)

I found Goldsmiths to be a dynamic and inclusive place to study. The staff in my department and within the wider community of the College were supportive and motivating, going out of their way to provide interesting and informative lectures and seminars to support our learning. After having completed my undergraduate degree, it was an easy decision for me to continue my postgraduate studies at Goldsmiths. I am currently training to be a primary school teacher. Having just finished my first placement, coming back to Goldsmiths for lectures felt like coming home. Once qualified, I hope to teach in the local area and to be able to continue to promote a love for learning that Goldsmiths has instilled in me.

Wan-Ting Huang, MA in Brand Development

I chose Goldsmiths because of its high reputation in teaching and its creative atmosphere. I saw that Goldsmiths had just launched a new postgraduate programme, Brand Development, which was the only one I found that focused on social and cultural aspects across various industries, rather than business or design orientation. It's a good balance, combining my previous practical experience with theoretical studies. The best thing about studying Brand Development at Goldsmiths is its interdisciplinarity. The course has close links with neighbouring departments, with a wide range of options like media and communication, sociology, and cultural entrepreneurship. It has increased my knowledge and understanding of branding and contemporary issues; what is more, it expanded my view to see brands and branding in more critical ways.

James Irwin, MFA in Computational Studio Arts

I decided to do an MFA to concentrate on developing my own practice more intensively. I didn't want to do a generic Fine Art Master's and so began to look for a course that was tailored to my specific interests. The structure of this programme has provided me with the technical competence and critical knowledge to position my practice in relation to its art historical context. I am currently preparing work for the final exhibition, which is to be held outside Goldsmiths in a building that is used as a hub for creative collaboration between different institutions, in King's Cross. I feel that the MFA has provided me with the opportunity to set my work aside from the norm, and for my work to be seen in different ways. The programme as a while has taken an alternative route, and offers you the opportunity to gain from the exposure that being 'alternative' provides.
