Academic Governance at Goldsmiths

What we do

Quality, Planning and Academic Governance is a new department bringing together the Quality and Planning Offices, plus the former Deputy Academic Registrar’s Team, now the Academic Services Office. With the Academic Services Office managing such things as External Examiner appointments, the academic approval of programmes and the programme and general regulations the Department now has responsibility for managing many of the institutional processes related to programme development and review, student number planning, the academic quality assurance framework as well as a coordinating and scrutiny role with respect to all the institution’s external data returns.

The Quality Office is responsible for: the College's quality assurance policies and procedures; supporting academic developments through collaborative provision and partnerships; and the oversight and administration of programmes within the University of London's External System.

The Planning Office is responsible for developing and supporting the processes by which the College plans for its future development and provides services which include: Management and administration of the College’s strategic planning processes; Liaison with external funding bodies, including the coordination of statutory returns to funding bodies and the Higher Education Statistics Agency; Support for major institutional projects; Student numbers planning; Coordination of institutional risk management.

The Academic Services Office is responsible for regulations relating to programmes, External Examiners and general academic matters. The Office administers student complaints, presentation ceremonies and the College’s procedures for appointing and supporting External Examiners.

Committee servicing

The Quality, Planning and Academic Governance department supports Academic Board plus two key committees that report to the Board: the Learning and Teaching Quality Committee, and the Academic Development Committee. The Department also supports most of the sub-committees of the Learning and Teaching Quality Committee: External System Sub-Committee; Programme Scrutiny Sub-Committee; and the Standards Scrutiny Sub-Committee. The remaining sub-committee, the Graduate School Board, is shared with Academic Development Committee and serviced by the Graduate School. In addition the Department supports the Risk Management Sub-Committee and the External Returns Group.
