Differences in the format of the RAE results
It is important to remember there will be no 5* awards.
The results for RAE 2008 will be in a very different format to previous years - instead of a single grading being awarded to each of the submissions in a Unit of Assessment, there will be a Quality Profile for each submission made.
Instead of working on a single scale point of 1 to 5* as in the 2001 results (see National Results on the HERO site) the RAE 2008 Quality Profiles will run on a scale from 4* to 0 (unclassified).
The profile will present the percentage of work assessed at each point on the scale for each Unit of Assessment (UoA) into which Goldsmiths made a submission.
The RAE Quality Profile will look like:
| Unit of assessment A |
FTE Category A staff submitted for assessment |
Percentage of research activity in the submission judged to meet the standard for: | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 star | 3 star | 2 star | 1 star | Unclassified | ||
| University x | 50 | 15 | 25 | 40 | 15 | 5 |
| University y | 20 | 0 | 5 | 40 | 45 | 10 |
Definitions of quality levels
| 4* | Quality that is world leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour. |
|---|---|
| 3* | Quality that is internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour but which nonetheless falls short of the highest standard of excellence. |
| 2* | Quality that is recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour. |
| 1* | Quality that is recognised nationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour. |
| Unclassified | Quality that falls below the standard of nationally recognised. Or which does not meet the published definition of research for the purpose of this assessment. |
Details of how the Quality Profile has been awarded
On 5 January 2009, the RAE team will provide a further breakdown of the Overall Quality Profile.
The percentage of work graded between 4* and unclassified for the key Assessment Elements for each UoA will be provided.
The Assessment Elements are:
- Research Outputs
- Research Environment
- Esteem Indicators
Therefore the Overall Quality Profile for each Unit of Assessment that Goldsmiths submitted to will be displayed as:
