Access to the RB

Access to the RB and the Goldsmiths Card

The facilities are available to all staff and students, whether part-time or full-time.

[Note: Students on non-credit-bearing courses are permitted to use the computer facilities only where a course specifically includes a computing element and the tutor has made arrangements with the Director of IT for such students to be registered.]

In order to use any facilities, all users need:

  • A Goldsmiths Card
  • IT Services Registration

All use of the facilities in the RB and of computer facilities elsewhere in College are subject to College Regulations and IT Rules.

There is no general charge for the use of facilities for Goldsmiths' staff or students. However, there are charges for photocopying, purchased consumables, some IT Services documentation; and certain specialist services may be subject to a specific charge.

Goldsmiths Card

To use any of the RB facilities and services you will need to have a Goldsmiths Card. This has the following functions:

  • An entry card - your Goldsmiths card operates the turnstiles at the RB entrance and exit.

  • A Library card - you need to show your Goldsmiths card to Library staff whenever you borrow any items from the Library.

  • A photocopying card - to use the photocopiers in the RB, you need to put photocopying credits on your Goldsmiths card using the revaluators on the ground floor.

  • A printing card - to use a printer in the RB, you need swipe your card in the card-reader.

  • An identification card - it proves that you are entitled to use the services and facilities available in the RB.

Students are issued with a Goldsmiths Card at enrolment. Staff can obtain their card from the Security Control Room (Room 198 in the Main Building, adjacent to the Night Entrance). This is also where all users should apply for replacement cards.

Cards are issued Monday to Friday, 12 noon - 2.00 pm and 5.00pm and 7.00pm. It should be possible to issue a new card immediately but, if not, within 24 hours.

Your Goldsmiths Card has an 11-digit number at the bottom. This is your Student Number and is required for some Library services. You MUST NOT lend your Goldsmiths card card to anyone.

IT Services Registration

In order to use any computer facilities in the RB you need:

  • a username
    and
  • a password

These are also prerequisites for a SHIBBOLETH account, which allows access to electronic library resources with your Goldsmiths username and password.

Collecting Your Username & Password

Usernames and passwords are issued to all new students at enrolment. Once issued, a username can be used immediately. (New students or new staff who do not collect their username and password within the first three months of enrolment, and any other students who have not previously registered, will need to fill in and submit an application form, available from the Computer Help Desk (on the first floor of the RB). The username and password can then be collected from the Computer Help Desk usually two working days after submission).

Usernames and passwords are only issued to users in person on proof of identity. Usernames are issued from the Computer Help Desk only to those who can show their Goldsmiths Card. A new member of staff who has not yet been issued with a Goldsmiths Card will need, alternatively, to bring some other proof of employment. For security reasons, usernames and passwords will NOT be issued over the phone or to a third party on a user's behalf. Nor will they be posted to departments or to home addresses.

Student usernames are valid for the duration of a course, and do not need to be renewed in subsequent years of a course.

Using Your Username & Password

Your username and password will allow you to use computers in the RB and to access the College network.

Your username will start with two letters indicating your department and end with your initials. It is unique to you; it is permanent and cannot be changed. The username will also serve as an address for you to receive electronic mail, and can be freely divulged. The password you are given is private to you, and serves to prevent others having unauthorised access to facilities which have been granted specifically to you. You should not under any circumstances reveal this password to others.

Since this initial password will also be known to the IT Services staff who issued it, you should change it immediately the first time you use IT Services facilities. See information on Changing Your Password.

To find out how to use your username and password log to access IT Services facilities, you should consult IT Services Guide Logging In [ PDF format ].

Security

There is a security system in operation at the exit of the RB to ensure that people do not remove books that have not been issued to them, or other items. It is important that any items you wish to borrow are correctly issued to you before you leave the building.

If the alarm sounds as you leave, please co-operate with the security staff on duty.
