During the 2007-08 session a three year refurbishment plan was drawn up to make the Rutherford Building more suitable for current methods of learning. Phase 1 was completed in the summer of 2008 and included:
- the removal and replacement of the Library issue desk and Helpdesk into one converged service point on the Ground Floor
- the creation of a new Digital Media Suite to replace the old Media Services Centre.
- the creation of social learning spaces for students on the ground floor
- additional IT facilities and a silent study room on the 2nd floor
- a new silent study room on the Library's 2nd floor
All of these developments have proven extremely popular with students. Phase II of the project is due to be completed during the summer recess of 2009.
Phase II
The second phase of the refurbishment project will incorporate the following actions:
Refurbishment of 1st floor IT Open Access and teaching rooms, including:
- new furniture throughout
- carpeting and redecoration
- re-cabling of networking infrastructure
- group study facilities in RB109
- a comfy seating area
- areas for students to use (and plug in) their own laptops
- maximisation of available teaching space by the installation of a flexible partition in RB102, creating one large or two regular sized teaching rooms
- the re-fitting if RB108 to provide call centre facilities
- "zoning" of the building to provide clear guidance on activities permitted in each area by the use of colour coordinated furniture
- new AV facilities in some teaching rooms
- improved wireless coverage

Library Refurbishment
- Special collections and archives reading room will move to ground floor, with more study space, A/v facilities for workshops and exhibitions space
- more space for books in the main library
- new 1st floor silent study area
- new arts reading lounge, 2nd floor, including current periodicals and 'new art books' display
- Subject Librarians office moved adjacent to reading room on 2nd floor, giving students easy access to their Subject Librarians
Disruption
A project of this magnitude brings with it a certain amount of disruption to facilities and there will be restricted access to services on the 1st floor during the month of August, when most of the work will be conducted. We will do everything possible to minimise any inconvenience that this may cause to users of the building.
