Regulations 2008-09

Regulation 11: Tutorial system

11.1 Each student on an award-bearing programme shall be supported by the Personal Tutorial system.

11.2 The role of the Personal Tutor is to be available to promote the student's academic and personal well-being.

11.3 Personal Tutors shall be designated, and students allocated to them, by the Heads of Department.

11.4 In the case of students following combined or interdisciplinary degree programmes, where contributing departments may each wish to designate a Personal Tutor for a particular student, one Personal Tutor shall be deemed to carry primary responsibility for the purposes of academic and pastoral support.

11.5 Students shall be entitled to approach the relevant Head of Department to request a change of Personal Tutor.

11.6 Academic and pastoral support shall be seen as interlinked in the first instance and shall not be dealt with by different categories of staff within the department.

11.7 A 'Personal Tutorial' shall be defined as a formal meeting between a Personal Tutor and an individual student or a small group of students, where the discussion does not form part of the scheduled teaching programme and will be an occasion for monitoring rather than instruction.

11.8 Personal tutorials shall take place on a scheduled basis for group sessions, and by appointment for individual contact.

11.9 Personal Tutors shall advise students in writing at the beginning of each session of their arrangements for group sessions and of their 'surgery' hours for individual sessions and shall post these arrangements on relevant notice boards.

11.10 Notwithstanding the foregoing, all students shall be free to approach the nearest member of staff for help should any emergency arise.

11.11 Personal Tutors shall report any academic issues raised to the relevant Head(s) of Department and/or Programme Leader or Programme Monitor.

11.12 Personal Tutors shall familiarise themselves with the pastoral and counselling support available in the College and shall facilitate contact between the student and the College's counselling and pastoral support staff, Departmental Senior Tutors, Student Support Office and Registry staff, as appropriate.
