PACE student wins international award
A former Goldsmiths student and visiting lecturer has been awarded the Inaugural ISME Gibson Community Based Music Education award.
Catherine Pestano, a social entrepreneur and Director of CRISP (Croydon Intercultural Singing Project), received the $45,000 award at a ceremony in Sweden in May 2007. The money will be used to run an innovative music project with children in Serbia, with the aim of building community relations and self-esteem.
The award is presented to non-profit organisations in the EU that provide innovative music education projects targeting young people who would not normally have the opportunity to experience and participate in music.
Catherine has a background in mental health social work and management, and is a social and community arts worker. She trained in community music workshop skills and world percussion at Goldsmiths' Department of Professional and Community Education (PACE), and has expanded her social work practice to set up grassroots community music projects, introducing people to their creativity.
